For the craftsman … an enchanting English “mini” coffin-style wood smoothing plane with brass sole, possibly from the late 1800s.  It is marked with the name “Farrow,” almost certainly the name of the owner, in three different locations.  (Most carpenters of the time had a name stamp to mark their tools and their work.)  Hewn by hand, likely in beechwood, the plane has a rich, warm patina and would make a special gift for a woodworker or anyone who appreciates fine vintage tools.

Coffin-style planes (named for their distinct shape) date back to at least the late 17th century.  Most are 6-8 inches long, whereas at only 4-1/2-inches in length with a 1-1/8-inch-wide blade, this example is an unusual size for its type and likely intended for a cabinet maker.  Use of wooden planes began to decline around World War I, though some craftsmen continued to prefer them over metal versions because the older planes were lighter, more comfortable, or simply out of tradition.  The brass foot plate on our tool may be a later addition.

Dimensions: 4-1/2” x 1-5/8” x 3-5/8”
Weight: 10.2 ounces

Condition notes: Wood displays general wear and abrasions consistent with use and age.  Blade is moderately sharp but has small, irregular indentations along its edge.  Coffin planes are known for being repairable (e.g. the steel blade separates from the main body for sharpening) but we have not attempted this and cannot ensure that it is possible.  Otherwise in very good antique condition but recommended for decorative use only.
